Our Honorary Member Mike Theaker, along with Mike’s former colleagues Tony Franks and Chris Dawson, have put together their recollections from over 25 years ago in a joint article, covering what they did in order to design a car worthy of being called a John Cooper Works MINI. Then our Chairman, Peter Barker, has written a report on the recently held Rallye Monte-Carlo Historique and Classique rallies. In fact, Peter also participated in the Monte-Carlo Classique which was run to mark the 100th anniversary of the first start of the Monte-Carlo Rallye in 1926 from John O’Groats. He was covering the progress of the Minis entered in the rallies and, at the same time, raising money for Prostate Cancer UK, driving in his trusty Triumph Herald. Whilst we are on the subject of competition, we have two articles covering the same event, and a somewhat unusual one which I had never come across, called the Vintage Sports-Car Club’s Pomeroy Trophy, or ‘The Pom’ as it has become known. The first report on this event is from our Appendix K Registrar Russell Earnshaw, since it featured an Appendix K Mini Cooper taking part in the event. Russell gives us a great insight into this unusual competition, and one which is actually quite intriguing. The second article on ‘The Pom’ has been written by Paul Freeman one of our regular contributors, and Paul was there to see how the five Minis that were entered in The Pom faired against a variety of types and ages of cars. And as always, Paul has included some great photos of not only some of the Minis, but the other strange and wonderful cars that took part in the event. Then our Old Cooper Stuff correspondent from down under, Stephen Dalton, has sent in a report on a car show near Melbourne at the Yarra Glen racecourse. This is a static display event with a great variety of vehicles of all ages and types, including Minis of course. It’s always nice to see what goes on in other countries and especially those that have the same cars as we do. Finally, we have twelve great register reports for you this month which I am sure many of you enjoy reading every month as I do. I never fail to learn something each month about our various makes and marks of Minis and MINIs. The registers are one of our magazine’s greatest assets I have to say. However, there is one Register that has lacked a registrar for a long time now and that is the Mk1 Cooper Register. So, if you think you might be knowledgeable enough to take on this role then please do contact our chairman, Peter Barker. Paul Sulma - Editor CooperWorld
